# How Often Should You Clean Your Dryer Vent?

Empty the lint filter every load and have the full vent run cleared at least once a year. Go sooner if drying drags on, the laundry room gets hot or the outside flap barely opens.

Clean the lint filter after every load, and have the whole dryer vent run cleared at least once a year. Go sooner if loads are taking longer to dry, the dryer or laundry room runs unusually hot, you smell something burning, or the flap on the outside vent cap barely opens while the machine is going. Big households, pets and long vent runs through an attic or down from a second floor all clog faster. Our [dryer vent cleaning](/services/dryer-vent-cleaning) starts at $150 and finishes with an airflow reading at the exterior cap.

## Why isn't the lint filter enough?

The lint screen catches only part of what a dryer throws off. The rest heads down the vent and piles up wherever the air slows — around elbows, in sagging stretches of flexible duct, and at the exterior cap, which is where vents most often actually block.

A partly blocked vent makes every load take longer and burn more power. Annoying, but survivable. A badly blocked one is a fire risk, because lint is highly flammable and the dryer is producing heat right next to it, which is why we treat this as a safety visit as much as a cleaning one.

## What are the signs a dryer vent is clogged?

The first clue is usually laundry that won't finish: towels and jeans that need a second cycle. Then come the heat signs. Clothes come out very hot, the top of the dryer is hot to the touch, or the laundry room turns humid and warm while the dryer runs. A burning or musty smell during a cycle belongs on the list too.

Outside, look for lint collecting around the vent cap, or a flap that barely lifts. Birds and wasps also like to nest in exterior vents, especially on quiet walls (it's more common than most people think).

**If you notice a burning smell, stop using the dryer until the vent has been checked.**

## How often does a dryer vent need cleaning?

| Home | Typical interval |
|---|---|
| One or two people, short straight run to an outside wall | Once a year |
| Family laundry most days, or pets that shed | Every six to twelve months |
| Long run through an attic, a wall cavity or up to the roof | Every six to twelve months, and check the cap more often |
| Any home showing the signs above | Now, whatever the date |

Run length matters as much as how much laundry you do. A single-story house with the dryer on an exterior wall has a short, straight shot outside. Plenty of two-story homes don't. A lot of newer builds in Natomas, Roseville and El Dorado Hills put the laundry room upstairs or in the middle of the house, so the vent has to climb through a wall or cross the attic, picking up two or three elbows before it ever reaches open air.

## What can you do yourself between cleanings?

Most of the upkeep is small stuff. Empty the lint filter every load, and now and then wash the screen in warm soapy water if fabric softener has left a film on it. Every so often, pull the dryer out and make sure the duct behind it isn't crushed or kinked.

Material matters. Use rigid or flexible metal duct — thin plastic or foil duct sags, traps lint and simply doesn't belong on a dryer.

Then step outside while the dryer runs and check the cap: you should feel strong airflow and see the flap open. One last habit worth keeping is not running the dryer when you leave the house or go to bed.

## What does a full dryer vent cleaning service include?

We start at the lint trap and its housing, then work from the machine end to the outside: the flexible duct behind the dryer, the rigid run through the wall or attic, and the exterior cap, which gets checked and cleared on every job. The crew uses a flexible vent-cleaning brush system and a HEPA vacuum for the lint, and takes the debris with them when they leave. At the end, airflow is measured at the cap with an airflow meter. You get an actual reading that the dryer is venting again, not just a duct that looks cleaner.

The price follows the length of the run and how many bends it takes, from $150. The work stops at the vent, though. Dryer repair belongs to an appliance technician, and rerouting or replacing ductwork is outside our scope; if the run is crushed or made of the wrong material, we'll tell you.

## Is dryer vent cleaning the same as air duct cleaning?

No. A dryer vent is one duct carrying hot, lint-heavy air from a single appliance to the outside. Air ducts are your heating and cooling system's supply and return runs throughout the house, and cleaning those is HVAC work with different equipment. We clean dryer vents, not HVAC ducts.

If dust is the problem in every room, changing the HVAC filter on schedule does more than most people expect. Our [post on valley dust](/blog/why-sacramento-area-homes-feel-dusty-again-three-days-after-a-clean) goes into it.

## Where do you offer dryer vent cleaning?

All over Sacramento, from Land Park and Curtis Park up to Natomas, plus Roseville, Antelope, Elk Grove, Davis, Galt, Auburn, Placerville and the foothill towns around them. Rural and foothill homes on acreage tend to have longer runs and a cap tucked onto a wall no one ever walks past. That makes the yearly check more important out there, not less.

## What's the practical takeaway?

Empty the filter every load, glance at the outside cap now and then, and get the full run cleared once a year — sooner if drying times start to creep. When you're ready, send a short request through the [contact page](/contact) saying where the dryer sits and where the vent comes out, and a person will reply with a starting price.
