# How to Remove Hard-Water Scale From Shower Glass

Hard-water scale comes off shower glass with a mild acid like white vinegar, time to soak and a non-scratch pad. Squeegee after every shower and it won't come back.

Hard-water scale on shower glass is the mineral left behind when water dries, and it comes off with a mild acid such as white vinegar, enough time to soak and a non-scratch pad, then a rinse and a squeegee. Fresh film lifts in one pass. Scale that has sat for months needs repeated soaks, and glass that's already etched won't come fully clear no matter what you use. In our [deep clean](/services/deep-cleaning), from $200, shower glass, faucets and shower heads get descaled, not just wiped.

## Why does shower glass get cloudy in the Sacramento area?

Tap water carries dissolved minerals, mostly calcium and magnesium. When a drop dries on glass, the water goes and the minerals stay put. Every shower lays down another thin coat, and soap residue binds into it until you've got that dull, milky film.

How hard your water is depends on your supplier and on whether the supply comes from rivers or wells, so it swings quite a bit across the region. If you want the actual number, your water supplier publishes a water quality report every year. The other local culprit is heat. In a dry Sacramento summer, water on glass evaporates fast, and spots dry in place before they ever get the chance to run off.

## Is it scale, soap scum or etching?

Wet the glass and look. Clear while wet but cloudy once dry? That's residue sitting on the surface, and it'll come off. Still cloudy while wet? The glass itself may be etched.

| What you see | Likely cause | What works |
|---|---|---|
| White spots and drip lines | Fresh mineral deposits | Vinegar spray, short soak, wipe and squeegee |
| A greasy film that smears | Soap scum | Dish soap and warm water first, then vinegar |
| A hard white crust near the bottom edge and the fixtures | Built-up scale | Repeated soaks with vinegar held against the glass |
| Cloudiness that stays when the glass is wet | Etching | Cleaning cannot reverse it |

## How do you remove hard-water stains from shower glass yourself?

1. **Rinse and degrease.** Wash the glass with warm water and a little dish soap. Soap scum sitting on top of the scale acts like a raincoat and keeps the acid from reaching it.
2. **Apply the acid.** Spray white vinegar (warmed, if you can) until the glass is completely wet.
3. **Keep it wet.** On vertical glass, vinegar runs off before it does its job. Press paper towels soaked in vinegar onto the worst areas so the acid stays in contact.
4. **Wait, then scrub.** Give it time. Then scrub with a non-scratch sponge. Thick scale may need a second or even a third round.
5. **Rinse and squeegee.** Rinse with clean water and squeegee the glass dry, or the rinse water just leaves a fresh set of spots.

Faucets and shower heads respond to the same treatment. For a shower head, tie a bag of vinegar around it and let it soak.

## What should you never use on shower glass?

Skip **steel wool, scouring powder and abrasive pads**. They scratch the glass, and scratches hold minerals far better than smooth glass ever did, so you end up making the problem stickier.

Never combine **bleach with vinegar or ammonia**. Mixing chlorine bleach with an acid, or with ammonia, releases toxic gas. Our crews never mix chlorine- and ammonia-based products under any circumstances, and you shouldn't either.

And keep **acid off natural stone**. Vinegar and other descalers etch marble, travertine and limestone, so don't let them touch a stone surround or bench. Test any product on a small hidden spot of a metal finish before you go at the whole fixture.

## How do you keep scale from coming back?

One habit does most of the work: a squeegee after every shower. Water you remove can't leave minerals behind. It takes less time than drying your hair.

Beyond that, run the bathroom fan during and after the shower so the glass dries faster and more evenly, and wipe the faucet and shower head dry every so often, since those scale up first. If scale is a problem all over the house, a water softener treats the cause rather than the symptom. That's a plumbing decision, though, not a cleaning one.

## What does professional shower cleaning include?

A regular [house cleaning](/services/house-cleaning) visit, from $165, keeps tubs, showers, mirrors and fixtures wiped down. It doesn't go after built-up scale. That's deep-cleaning work.

In a deep clean, we descale shower glass, faucets and shower heads and scrub the tile and grout in the kitchen and bathrooms. Descaling products are stronger than our everyday kit, which runs on pH-neutral, EPA Safer Choice products by default, so the crew ventilates rooms while working and keeps the stronger products in a locked caddy. A [move-in or move-out clean](/services/move-in-out-cleaning), from $375, includes a full bathroom descale too.

One honest limit. If the glass is etched, no amount of cleaning changes that, and you're better off knowing before you pay for a descale. The wet test above will tell you.

The same minerals mark outside glass wherever sprinklers hit it. Our [window cleaning](/services/window-cleaning) rinses with filtered, softened water so the glass dries spot-free, and the [post on window cleaning frequency](/blog/window-cleaning-frequency-sacramento-valley) gets into sprinkler timing.

## What's the fastest way to get clear shower glass and keep it?

Vinegar, patience and a non-scratch pad, with bleach nowhere near any of it. Then squeegee after every shower so this is a job you do once. If the scale has had months or years to harden, a [deep clean](/services/deep-cleaning) resets the bathrooms and a regular schedule holds them there.
