# How Often Should You Deep Clean Your House?

Once or twice a year covers most homes, as long as regular cleaning keeps things in check between visits. Shedding pets, a wood-burning fireplace or construction next door shorten that to every four to six months.

How often should you deep clean your house? For most homes, once or twice a year is plenty, provided [regular maintenance cleaning](/services/house-cleaning) happens in between. Shedding pets, a wood-burning fireplace or construction down the street all argue for a shorter cycle. That's what we tell our own clients in Sacramento, Roseville and Elk Grove before they book a [deep clean](/services/deep-cleaning).

People underestimate the maintenance layer. Skip it, and buildup creeps back within weeks — the yearly deep clean becomes an expensive reset button.

## What does a deep clean cover that a regular visit doesn't?

Scope, not effort. A maintenance visit keeps up with what you see and touch every week. Home deep cleaning goes after what builds up slowly: baseboards, door frames, switch plates and vent covers; the grout lines in kitchens and bathrooms; hard-water scale on shower glass and fixtures; that faintly greasy film on kitchen cabinet fronts; and the dust riding on light fixtures and ceiling fan blades.

None of it looks dramatic on a given Tuesday. Together, it's the gap between tidy and clean.

## When is once a year not enough?

Usually one of three things is going on.

**Shedding pets.** Fur and dander work their way into vents and under the sofa faster than a weekly vacuum can pull them back out. **Wood-burning fireplaces.** Fine ash drifts surprisingly far from the hearth over one heating season. **Nearby construction.** In fast-growing pockets like West Roseville, builder dust doesn't respect property lines — window tracks and registers load up in months, not years.

For homes like these we suggest a deep clean every four to six months, focused on the rooms taking the hit.

## How often should you deep clean your house, by type of home?

| Home | Deep clean | Regular cleaning in between |
|---|---|---|
| One or two people, no pets | Once a year | Biweekly or monthly |
| Family with kids | Twice a year | Weekly or biweekly |
| Shedding pets | Every four to six months | Weekly or biweekly |
| Wood-burning fireplace | Once after the heating season, plus a yearly pass | Biweekly |
| Construction or a remodel nearby | Every four to six months while it lasts | Biweekly |
| No regular cleaning at all | A deep clean first, then a regular schedule | Start biweekly |

Our post on [biweekly vs. monthly cleaning](/blog/biweekly-vs-monthly-house-cleaning) helps pick the regular layer. Suspect you're overbuying? Read [when you do not need a deep clean](/blog/when-you-do-not-need-a-deep-clean) — often a regular visit does the job.

## How can you tell your home is due for a deep clean?

Forget the calendar for a moment. Three quick checks tell you more than any schedule.

Wipe the shower glass the way you normally would: if it stays cloudy, scale has set in. Run a white cloth along a baseboard and see whether it comes back grey. Then touch the kitchen cabinet doors near the handles — a faint stickiness means grease has been quietly accumulating.

Fail any one and the buildup layer is due. Two minutes, and more honest than any chart.

## Does a new or renovated home need one before you move in?

Yes, without exception. Moving into a newly built or freshly renovated place? Treat the [move-in deep clean](/services/move-in-out-cleaning) as non-negotiable. Construction dust lingers in every track, register and cabinet interior long after the site itself looks finished.

So: deep clean once or twice a year, keep regular cleaning in between, and tighten the cycle when pets, a fireplace or someone else's building project feed the dust.

A regular clean keeps the toilet, tub, shower, mirrors and fixtures in shape. A deep clean goes further: hand-scrubbed grout, descaled glass, faucets and shower heads, and the trim and vents where dust quietly collects.
