# Should You Tip Your House Cleaners, and How Much?

Do you tip house cleaners? It's optional, and there's no set amount. Many people tip after a heavy one-time job, while recurring clients often give one thank-you around the holidays.

Do you tip house cleaners? You can, but it's optional, and there's no fixed amount anyone expects. Plenty of people tip after a one-time or unusually heavy clean, and clients on a recurring plan often give a single thank-you around the holidays instead of something every visit. Expert Home Cleaners doesn't publish a tipping rule, so treat this as general guidance, not company policy.

## Do you tip house cleaners as a rule?

No. Cleaning isn't restaurant service, where the tip is baked into how the server gets paid. Some households tip their cleaners and some never do. Both are completely normal, and the price you agreed on is the price of the job.

A tip fits best as a thank-you: for work that went past what you expected, or for a crew that has looked after your home well for a long time.

## When does a tip make the most sense?

Usually after a job that was harder than it looked. A first clean after months without help, say, or a kitchen with more grease than anyone guessed, or a bathroom carrying years of scale.

A move-out clean is another. Empty-home cleaning is long, physical work (inside every cabinet, the oven, the refrigerator, the tracks, the baseboards), and nobody sees most of it until the inspection. A **deep clean** falls in the same bracket, since it runs noticeably longer than a regular visit, with baseboards, grout and fixtures done by hand.

Then there are the tight deadlines: guests arriving that evening, a listing photo shoot, a final walk-through in the morning.

And honestly? **Summer heat.** Sacramento summers are brutal, and a crew working a whole house through that earns a thank-you, even if it's just cold water from the fridge.

## How much to tip house cleaners?

There's no standard figure. Anyone who quotes you one is really describing their own habit. Most people land on one of three approaches:

- A flat amount per cleaner, the same each time they tip.
- A share of the visit's price, which is more common on one-time jobs.
- One larger thank-you a year for a recurring crew, often near the holidays.

Pick whatever fits your budget and stay with it. With a recurring crew, consistency counts for more than the size of any one tip. Crews usually run two or three people, so think per cleaner rather than per visit, and make sure everyone who worked gets a share.

## Does it differ for recurring and one-time cleaning?

| Situation | Common approach |
|---|---|
| Weekly, bi-weekly or monthly plan | No tip at each visit is common. A holiday or year-end thank-you is a common alternative. |
| One-time regular clean | Optional. Many people tip when the job went beyond what they expected. |
| Deep clean or move-out clean | Optional. These are long, physical jobs, and a tip is a common way to say thanks. |
| A visit where something was missed | Use the re-clean, not the tip, to settle it (see below). |

On a recurring plan, later visits usually stay with the same crew. That's part of why a yearly thank-you works so well — it lands with people who already know your home.

## How do you give a tip so it reaches the crew?

Cash handed to each cleaner at the end of the visit is the simplest route. An envelope with their names on it, left somewhere the crew will spot it, works too. Not going to be home? Tell the crew where you left it. And if you'd rather tip some other way, just ask the cleaners what works for them.

## What if something was missed?

Don't use the tip to make the point. If something got missed, tell us within 24 hours and the crew comes back to re-clean it free. That fixes the actual problem, and the tip stays a separate decision.

## What are good alternatives to a tip?

Lots of clients never tip and still make a real difference to their crew. A few things land about as well as money does.

**A review that names the crew** is the big one. A short, specific review on Google or Thumbtack tells the owners exactly who did the work, and it helps the next family choose. **Direct feedback** helps too: tell us what the crew did well. Every crew trains on the same checklists, and specific notes are how they keep your home the way you like it.

A **referral** to a neighbor, a friend or family member counts. So does **a ready home**: counters cleared, pets secured, and a way in at the start of the arrival window. That lets the crew spend the visit cleaning instead of waiting at the door.

Tip when a job went past what you expected, think about a yearly thank-you if the same crew comes every few weeks, and don't underestimate a review with their names in it.
