Cleaning Up After Wildfire Smoke and Ash at Home

Once officials say the air has cleared, lift ash with damp cloths and a HEPA vacuum, never a broom or leaf blower. Smoke damage, odor treatment, mold and biohazards are jobs for restoration specialists.

After wildfire smoke, most homes need ordinary cleaning done with care: ash lifted with damp cloths and a HEPA vacuum instead of a broom or a leaf blower, surfaces wiped from the top down, the HVAC filter swapped, and windows, screens and outdoor surfaces washed once the air has cleared. Structural fire damage, smoke odor treatment, mold and biohazard cleanup are specialist restoration work. Expert Home Cleaners doesn't take those on, and this post is upfront about exactly where that line falls.

When is it safe to start cleaning up wildfire smoke and ash?

When your local air district and county public health department say outdoor air quality has improved. Not before. Clean while smoke is still drifting in and you'll be doing it all twice, and stirring up ash puts fine particles right back into the air you're breathing.

Follow current public health guidance on masks and protective gear for ash cleanup, because it gets updated during fire events. At a bare minimum, wear gloves, long sleeves and eye protection, and keep kids and pets away from wherever ash is being moved. If anyone in the house has a heart or lung condition, check with a doctor before they pitch in.

What should you avoid doing?

Most of the mistakes come from treating ash like ordinary dirt.

  • Dry sweeping or dusting. A broom or dry duster just tosses fine ash back into the air.
  • Leaf blowers. They scatter ash across your yard, into the neighbors' yards and back in through open windows.
  • A shop vacuum or household vacuum without a fine filter. Fine ash goes straight through and blows out the exhaust. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter.
  • Washing ash into the street. Many local agencies ask residents not to rinse ash into storm drains, so check your city's guidance on disposal.
  • High pressure on anything damaged. Water at pressure finishes off surfaces that heat or embers have already weakened.

What can you clean yourself?

Indoors, it's mostly patient, repeated wiping. Work from the top of each room down, going over hard surfaces, counters and shelves with a damp cloth that you rinse often. Vacuum floors and upholstery with a HEPA vacuum, then mop the hard floors. Launder bedding, curtains and any washable cushion covers.

Replace the HVAC filter, too — and check it again a little later, because it keeps catching whatever is still floating around the house.

Outside, mist the ash gently with a hose so it doesn't lift, then collect it instead of blowing or hosing it away. Wash patio furniture, outdoor toys and pet bowls before anyone uses them.

Where does ash hide after the obvious surfaces are done?

Fine ash settles wherever air moves and then stops. Funny enough, the spots people miss are the same ones that trap everyday valley dust: window tracks and sills, screens, vent covers and return grilles, baseboards, the tops of door frames, ceiling fan blades and light fixtures. Outdoors, look at the gutters, solar panels, decks and the siding up under the eaves.

What is outside our scope?

A good share of post-fire work belongs to other trades. Our service pages already list these as not included, and we'd much rather tell you here than after a crew has shown up.

Mold remediation and biohazard cleanup are excluded from both house cleaning and deep cleaning. If firefighting water or a leak has left anything damp, you're looking at a remediation job. Smoke and fire damage restoration is the same story: treating smoke odor in walls, insulation and ducts, and restoring fire-damaged materials, is restoration contractor work, and it isn't a service we offer. Nor is HVAC duct cleaning. We clean vent covers and grilles, not the ductwork behind them.

A few more limits:

  • Damaged or cracked surfaces. We clean cracked glass but don't repair or replace it, and pressure washing skips anything already loose or damaged. Roofs are never pressure washed.
  • Burned debris. Our cleanouts exclude construction and demolition debris and hazardous material beyond standard household items. Debris from burned structures goes to crews equipped for it.
  • Window work from a ladder. Exterior glass gets washed from the ground with a water-fed pole, so window jobs that would put someone on a ladder at height aren't something we take on. Gutters and roofs are separate services with their own setup.

Should you call your insurer before cleaning?

If you suspect smoke or fire damage, yes. Homeowner's insurers commonly want photos of the damage before anything gets cleaned, and some send out their own restoration contractor. So photograph the rooms, surfaces and outdoor areas first. Clean second.

What's the safest order to do all this in?

Wait for the all-clear. Gear up. Reach for damp cloths and a HEPA vacuum, and hand off damaged materials, odor and mold to the specialists who handle them. If the house itself is sound and just needs the ash and film gone, send a short request through the contact page and tell us what the smoke left behind; a person replies with a starting price the same business day.
