Start with the tag. Most sofas carry a cleaning code that says whether water is safe on the fabric, and that code decides how the piece can be cleaned. Professional sofa cleaning then tests the method on a small hidden patch, pre-treats the heaviest spots, and uses extraction equipment to pull dirt, oils and odor out of the fabric instead of pushing them deeper. Our carpet and upholstery cleaning covers sofas, armchairs, dining chairs and mattresses, with a $220 minimum per visit.
What do the W, S and X cleaning codes on a sofa mean?
| Code | Meaning | What it means for cleaning |
|---|---|---|
| W | Water-based cleaners are safe | Suits water-based extraction |
| S | Solvent only, no water | Water can leave rings or shrink the fabric; tell us before booking |
| W/S or SW | Either water or solvent | Usually fine for extraction after a patch test |
| X | Vacuum or brush only | No wet cleaning of any kind |
Tag cut off long ago? Just say so in your request. Either way, the crew tests on a hidden spot before touching anything visible.
How does professional upholstery cleaning work?
- Look at the material, then test. A small hidden patch gets cleaned first to see how the fabric and its color react.
- Treat the worst spots first. The heavily soiled areas, such as arms, headrests and seat fronts, are treated before the main pass.
- Extract. The sofa, its cushions and any matching pieces are cleaned through with extraction equipment, which pulls residue up and out of the fibers rather than smearing it around.
- Treat odor where needed. In homes with pets, an odor treatment follows extraction.
That is the process we followed for a family sectional and carpet in Roseville, and for a sofa and carpet in an Antelope home with two dogs, where vacuuming had never touched the odor.
What do you need to have ready?
Water and power. Both of them. We bring our own extraction equipment, and it will not run on one without the other. If either is off at the property, tell us when you ask for an estimate, because it is the one thing most likely to stop a booked visit from going ahead.
Beyond that, clear the cushions of throws and toys, and give the crew room to work around the sofa.
What does sofa cleaning cost?
The price follows the size of the piece and how soiled it is, the same way carpet is priced, and upholstery cleaning in Lincoln is priced exactly as it is everywhere else we work. There is no flat per-seat rate. Every visit has a $220 minimum, because carrying the machine in and hooking it up takes as long for one sofa as for a sofa, two chairs and a room of carpet. So if a second piece could use it, this is the visit to add it. Our post on carpet vs. upholstery cleaning explains why the two get handled differently.
What about area rugs and leather?
- Area rugs: a rug we have not seen may be made of something that rules out our method. Describe it in your request, ideally with a photo of the label, so you get the answer before the visit rather than halfway through it.
- Leather: leather is not cleaned by extraction. Mention it, and we will tell you what is and is not possible for that piece.
How can you keep a sofa clean longer?
Small habits do most of it. Vacuum the cushions and crevices every week or two with an upholstery tool. Blot spills straight away; rubbing spreads them and pushes them deeper, which is the opposite of what you want. Flip and rotate the cushions so wear and fading stay even.
And if the dog has a favorite spot, put a washable throw on it.
When is it time to book a sofa cleaning?
When the fabric looks dull or smells stale, it is due. Check the code on the tag, keep blotting rather than rubbing in the meantime, bundle the pieces into one visit, and make sure water and power are on. Then send the size of each piece and how soiled it is through the contact page, and a person will reply with a starting price.
