Esparto is a small agricultural town in the Capay Valley, in Yolo County, west of the Sacramento Valley floor. Its homes mostly belong to the farming community around it rather than to commuters, and that shows in how they are built and used: many single-story, farmhouse-style houses, larger agricultural parcels, and barns, sheds and outbuildings next to the main house.
The local factor is dust. Orchards and row crops surround the town on both sides, and in the working seasons the fields add agricultural dust on top of the ordinary valley dust. It ends up in a few predictable places:
- window tracks, sills and screens, especially on the side facing the fields
- vent covers, baseboards and ceiling fan blades indoors
- gutters, driveways and walkways outside
- solar panels, which here are mostly retrofits on older roofs
Open farmland also means less shade than the tree-lined parts of the metro, so roofs in Esparto tend to collect dust rather than heavy moss. New ground-up construction is limited; a farmhouse or outbuilding renovation is the more common building job in town.
