How Long Does a Professional House Cleaning Take?

A professional house cleaning usually takes 3 to 6 hours. Across 205 logged visits, the median was 4.5 hours, and deep cleans run noticeably longer than that.

How long does house cleaning take? A professional visit usually runs between 3 and 6 hours. Across 205 house-cleaning visits in Expert Home Cleaners' job logs, the median visit took 4.5 hours, the middle half took between 3 and 6 hours, and the shortest took 2 hours. Larger homes, and homes that have gone a long time without a clean, take longer.

Where do these numbers come from?

From our own job logs for regular house cleaning visits in the Sacramento region. Each figure is the length of the visit as logged at the home, with whatever crew was sent that day.

Shortest visit2 hours
Median visit4.5 hours
Middle half of visits3 to 6 hours

The median is the midpoint: half the visits wrapped up in under 4.5 hours, and half ran longer. Honestly, the middle-half range is the better number to plan around. A single figure hides how much homes differ, while the range shows it. Visits outside that range landed on both sides, some quicker and some longer.

What makes a house cleaning take longer?

  • Size. Every bedroom and bathroom adds another room to the checklist. Bathrooms and the kitchen take the most time for their size, since that's where most of the fixtures and surfaces are.
  • Condition. A home that has gone months without a professional clean needs a first visit to bring it up to a baseline. That visit runs longer than the ones after it.
  • Pets. Hair on floors, rugs and along furniture edges adds vacuuming time.
  • Add-ons. Inside the oven, inside the refrigerator, interior windows, a change of bed linens: each one is extra work on top of the checklist.
  • Clutter. The crew dusts and wipes open surfaces, so counters and tables buried under items take longer to work around. Organizing cluttered storage isn't part of a house cleaning visit at all.
  • Hard-water scale. Shower glass and fixtures around Sacramento tend to collect mineral scale. A regular visit cleans them; removing built-up scale is deep-clean work.

Does the size of the crew change the time?

Yes. Crews are usually two or three people, matched to the size of the home, so a bigger house gets more hands and not just more hours. The logged figures above already reflect the crew that was on site, which means crew size is baked into them.

Later visits on a recurring plan usually stay with the same crew. And a crew that already knows the home, the pets and the problem spots tends to work through it with a lot less guesswork.

How long does a deep clean take?

Noticeably longer than a regular visit.

A deep clean covers everything on the regular checklist and then goes further: baseboards, door frames, switch plates and vent covers by hand, grout scrubbed in the kitchen and bathrooms, shower glass and fixtures descaled, cabinet fronts degreased, and fan blades cleaned within ladder reach. With that much on the list, it's scheduled with its own crew and never squeezed in between other jobs.

What we don't have is logged hour figures for deep cleans like the ones for regular visits, so we won't put a number on it here. Heavy grout buildup is the main thing that adds hours. For how often a deep clean is worth doing, see how often you should actually deep clean your home.

How can you make the visit go faster?

  • Clear items off counters, tables and floors before the crew arrives.
  • Run the dishes and laundry yourself; neither is part of a visit.
  • Mention pets, problem areas and add-ons in your request, so the crew is sized to the job.
  • Make sure the crew can get in at the start of the visit window. We confirm the window the day before and text you when the team is on the way.

How much time should you set aside?

For a typical home on a regular visit, the 3-to-6-hour range is a sensible block to plan around. A small apartment in good shape can finish near the short end. A large home, a home with pets and several add-ons, or a first visit after a long gap can run past it.

Expect around 4.5 hours for a typical regular visit, plan for 3 to 6, and assume a deep clean or a first visit after a long gap will take longer. When you send a request through our contact page, mention bedrooms, bathrooms, pets and the home's condition, and the person who replies can tell you what to expect for your home rather than an average one.
